Mentors

ORSPN Mentors submitted April 6, 2024

Rachel Fix, OT
I have worked with Findlay Schools for 2 years, and have been in school practice for 6 years and have a solid understanding of expectations for ETRs and IEPs.
a. Have you or your school district participated in a recent Monitoring Review by OEC?
– I have not.
b. Briefly share how you have received your training on ETR and IEP documentation.
– Most of my training on IEPs/ETRs was through North Central Ohio ESC where I worked for 4 years as a
brand-new school-based therapist (previous experience in the medical model)
c. Would you be open to mentoring RSPs other than OTs?
– I’d be open to mentoring any discipline!
d. Do you prefer any particular regions of the state or type of school district, i.e. urban, rural, suburban?
– I am located in NW Ohio, so that region seems to make sense. But I am open to other areas. I would be
most comfortable with rural or suburban, as I don’t have experience with large “city” schools.

Marcy Spence, SLP, Pupil Services Consultant/Supervisor
I have 44 years under my belt as an SLP,  35 of which were spent as a SLP/transition coordinator for
Beachwood City Schools.  My last 9 years have been spent as a special education director and consultant
in 3 different districts in both southeast and northeast Ohio. I am currently working for the Twinsburg
City School District.
a. Have you or your school district participated in a recent Monitoring Review by OEC?
– I was a sped director at Trimble Local in Athens County.  During that time, we had an Indicator
11 finding where I worked closely with SST 16 to complete the required corrective action.
– When I was a sped director at Rootstown, we participated in Summit County ESC’s OEC review
(fall 2018).  From that review, one of our corrective actions was to form an internal monitoring
team.  I was the lead on that team.
– Currently, as the special ed consultant/supervisor at Twinsburg City Schools, along with the
sped director, and our district team I am receiving the 2023-24 internal monitoring training from
SST 8.
– During my tenure as a SLP for Beachwood City Schools, as well as during my administrative
career, I have attended just about every PD/Forum/Roundtable/Legal Updates, etc. that has
been offered through Cuyahoga, Summit and Athens Counties ESCs.  I am OTES credentialed and
have been through mediation/due process.
b. Briefly share how you have received your training on ETR and IEP documentation.

– In addition to the training as part of my work noted above, as a SLP, transition coordinator,
director and consultant, I’ve completed a slew of online training modules through OCALI, SSTs
(canvas), ASHA, OSHLA, OSSPEAC etc.
c. Would you be open to mentoring RSPs other than SLPs?
– I am interested in mentoring any RSP.
d. Do you prefer any particular region of the state or type of school district, i.e. urban, rural, suburban?
– No, not really but my experience has been in suburban and rural districts.

Nichole Dearth MOT, OTR/L, Midwest Regional ESC
I’ve been practicing in schools with age 3-22 students since 2014. My passion is autistic students and supporting them as well as their families through their education. I currently serve as OT for three rural schools and supervise 2 OTAs. I have provided all tiers of service under MTSS in my largest district and l love collaboration with teachers! I taught in an OTA program for 9 years as adjunct in the pediatrics intervention course.
I also serve on the OTPTAT board and am currently the OT section chair and I fill the school-based OT seat. While serving on the board I assist in answering question from licensees regarding school-based practice and have presented twice at the Ohio School Based Practitioners Summit on ethics and school-based services.
a. Have any of the districts in your ESC region participated in a recent Monitoring Review by OEC?
-Yes. Our county Board of DD went through a large review that lasted over a year a few years ago and all of my districts had students in their classrooms, so all were affected and provided additional training.
b. Share how you have received your training on ETR and IEP documentation.
-My training has come from various places including our SST, ORSPN trainings with ODE, directly reading ORC, and through my ESC.
c. Would you be open to mentoring RSPs other than OTs?
– Yes. I work closely with PT, SLP’s and IS’s serving in many LRE settings including resource rooms, full inclusion, cross category, and autism classrooms, both in preschool and school age populations.
d. Do you prefer a particular region of the state or type of school district, i.e. urban, rural, suburban?
– I am most familiar with rural settings including Title 1 schools.
